Are you remodeling your bathroom?

One of the first things you’ll need to do is remove the old bathtub.

Today’s podcast lesson discusses how to remove a fiberglass bathtub and surround.

You’ll have to disassemble all the plumbing from the tub then cut it into pieces.

Reciprocating saws are the best tool for any demo work, and in particular taking apart fiberglass bathtubs.

My buddy Steve White from SRW Contracting recently made a video tutorial on this topic.

What’s the best way to adhere tile?

Thin-set, plain and simple.

But which thin-set is the best for tiling showers or floors?

Lately we’ve been digging Ardex’s X 77 because it can handle large formate tiles that are heavy. The cool part about X 77 is that it keeps large tiles sticking to the wall and is easy to spread.

The consistency should be like whipped icing, which means anyone can spread Ardex X 77 with a trowel.

Check it out here

http://www.ardex.com/

In this podcast we also mention Schulter Kerdi and Wedi as great substrates for shower tiling projects.

What’s the easiest way to cut holes in drywall?

It’s not with a manual saw.

If you want an easy way to cut the outline of lights or electrical boxes in drywall the RotoZip is the way to go.

I recently saw my buddy Steve from SRW Contracting use the RotoZip during our bathroom remodeling video series.

We drywalled the ceiling and had to cut out the areas for the lights and fan. His cuts were perfect.

Drywalling is so much easier with this affordable tool.

Should you buy a miter saw or circular saw?

If you’re on a budget you might only have money for one saw.

Here’s my suggestion, if you’re making miter cuts for crown molding opt of a miter saw.

Straight cuts can be done by circular saws, so if you’re doing mostly straight cuts for framing or furniture you should think about getting a circular saw.

Keep in mind that you can also cut down large sheet goods using a Kreg Rip-Cut tool attached to your circular saw. We have a tutorial on this over on Home Repair Tutor

http://www.homerepairtutor.com/cutting-plywood-and-breaking-down-sheet-goods/

Check out the Skil Warm Drive saw, this is the circular many people swear by

https://www.skiltools.com/Pages/Home.aspx

What kind of miter saw should you think about buying?

I personally like DeWalt

Have you been lucky to work with a bathroom remodeler?

If not then you’re in luck.

Today’s show features Steve White from SRW Contracting. Steve is a master bathroom remodeler and tile setter.

He’s shares 3 bathroom remodeling tips that will help you keep your house clean and safe.

Steve recommends using the Zip Wall to keep dust to a minimum, this is important if your bathroom is right next to a bedroom.

Check out the Zip Wall

https://www.zipwall.com/

His second tip is to use a carpet shield instead of drop cloths. You can find these at Sherwin Williams or Home Depot

Steve’s third tip is to use SharkBite caps to cap off the bathroom plumbing. SharkBites are push on fittings for pipes and any DIYer can use them. This tip allows you to use the water in the rest of your house while remodeling your bathroom.

Here’s the link to SharkBite’s website

Should you buy or rent tools?

This question has come up several times in our HRT community.

Always compare the price to rent with the price of the tool then estimate how long you’ll need the tool.

For example, my buddy Tim needed an electric jack hammer.

He could rent it for $75 a day or buy one for $154. If he needed it for more than 2 days he should just buy the jack hammer.

If you want to recoup some of the money you can sell your tool over on Craigslist.

Listen to the show for all the details on this topic.

Where can you find good prices on bathroom faucets?

You can wait for a sale at the local home store but I’ve got a better solution.

Faucet Depot is a great online site that offers discounts on name brand bathroom faucets.

I bought a faucet there a few weeks back and saved around $60 versus the home store.

They offer a lot more than faucets and it’s worth your time to check them out

Do you have efflorescence?

It looks like white residue and appears on stone or brick.

There’s a great way to remove it using either vinegar or muriatic acid.

Always wear goggles, protective clothing, and a respirator when using muriatic acid

Check out my tutorial over on Home Repair Tutor to see how to get rid of this in one day

How do you keep tabs on your home while you’re away?

Nest has a great new security camera called the NestCam.

It records video in 1080p and will send alerts to your phone if it detects something suspicious.

You can also use it to talk to your dog…more on that in the podcast.

Pair the NestCam with the Nest Protect and you’ve got an alert system that can show you if you have a fire.

Nest now has a triple threat in home automation with their thermostat, CO/Smoke alarm, and now the NestCam.

Pat Dollar from our Facebook Group shared how she was able to tile her bathroom by getting help from her local tile store.

She shared with our Group how the local store went the extra mile to help her cut the tiles, pick tools, and choose the mastic & grout.

The point here is to not forgot how much of a resource local tiles stores can be if you’re redoing your kitchen or bathroom.

How do you get your tile grout lines to look amazing?

Professional tile setters are use the Tuscan Leveling System. They have two different kinds of systems: Strap & Cap and the Tuscan SeamClip.

You can check them both out for yourself
