Would you like to replace your old 1970s tub?

Today’s show answers questions from our HRT Facebook Community.

My buddy Steve White from SRW Contracting Inc dives into 3 questions from our fans.

The first one asks how to remove an old one piece fiberglass tub from a small bathroom?

Question number 2 asks Steve what he thinks are the best materials for tubs these days.

You’ll have to listen to get the scoop.

And the final question tackles installing a new larger tub in an existing space, do you need to be concerned about the weight?

Steve does a great job breaking down these concepts, so don’t miss out.

How should you install a recessed shower niche?

Steve White from SRW Contracting gives you great tips.

Here’s the breakdown

1. Don’t add a recessed niche on an exterior wall because you can’t insulate behind it

2. Buy a pre-made shower niche from Schluter, Wedi, or Laticrete

3. If you build a shower niche Steve recommends doing it with Wedi building panels

4. When designing a shower niche you can frame it with pencil trim, bullnose edging, and metal edging

5. If you want a unique look inside the niche you can use 3/8” tempered glass

Listen to the entire show to get all of Steve’s tips.

What tool should every homeowner have?

IMO it’s an oscillating multi-tool.

Why?

Because you can use it to cut, grind, sand, and more.

I reached out to Fein because they’re one of the most respected tool companies in the world.

The MultiMaster 350Q is Fein’s top of the line oscillating multi-tool.

It comes with a variety of different accessories but you can buy way more for different applications.

The 350Q didn’t disappoint me.

It’s lighter, quieter, and more powerful than prior multi-tools I’ve tried.

Plus you can get a 3-Year warranty via Fein.

But this is one of those tools that you’ll have for a long time, something you can possibly pass down through generations.

Where in the heck would you use a planer?

Well, have you ever encountered a door that scrapes the floor…yep, this can be fixed with a planer.

You can also trim down bowed studs with a planer and this is important to address if you’re tiling a shower or bathtub surround.

My buddy Stuart over at http://toolguyd.com/ did a new review on Milwaukee’s new cordless M18 planer.

The M18 has some awesome capabilities, like being about to make trim down material that’s up to

3 1/4” wide.

You can also make rabbet cuts that are 27/64” deep.

Of course the M18 cordless planer also comes with an edge guide.

Check out Stuart’s full review on Milwaukee’s new M18 cordless planer

How can you fix cracked tiles?

It’s not that bad but will take some elbow grease.

You’ll need the right tools and this might cost you $50-$75 but that money is well spent.

Remove the grout first from around the cracked tiles.

Apply blue painter’s tape to the border of the cracked tool.

Once the grout is removed apply blue tape to the center of the tile.

Drill three holes in a triangular shape into the center of the tile with a carbide drill bit.

Then pound out the holes using a 1/4 cold chisel and hammer.

Check out my tutorial on how to fix an ugly cracked tile to get the rest of the details

Why should you care about electrical surges?

Okay, maybe I should rephrase this question: how much would it cost to replace your refrigerator or television?

Quite a bit of dinero, right.

What can you do to protect against surges in electricity that ruin electrical devices?

1. Add a surge protector at your electrical meter outside

2. Add a surge protector at your electrical panel…this can cost about $200 but is worth it

3. Add surge protector outlets where your most important electronics are plugged into the wall

Check out Leviton’s website for more information on devices that can help with surges in electricity

Did you know your house has harmful VOCs?

One way to combat VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) is to use AirRenew drywall.

This type of drywall has a core that absorbs VOCs and turns them into safe inert compounds.

Plus, the core and paper help prevent mold and mildew.

Can you paint AirRenew drywall?

Yep, it’ll still absorb VOCs after 25 coats of latex paint.

Pretty sweet.

The cost is about $12.99 per 4x8x 1/2 inch sheet.

About the same price as a normal sheet of drywall.

Check out the AirRenew site for more info

Buying tools is fun, but what are the top 5 tools you should consider?

The #1 tool every homeowner should have is an impact driver, I personally like DeWalt, Ridgid, Bosch, and Milwaukee’s drivers

#2 is the oscillating multi-tool and the brand I recommend is FEIN which you can now get at Home Depot

#3 is the circular saw and Skil makes the well respected warm drive circular saw

#4 is the sliding compound miter saw, and I’m super excited for the 20V Max by DeWalt

#5 are the tools from Klein for electrical work, specifically their insulated screwdrivers, they also make fantastic electrical testers that keep you safe

Wedi building panels are awesome for shower remodeling.

They’re way lighter than cement board and can be cut with a utility knife.

Plus, they help insulate exterior walls and this keep your bathroom warm.

Each panel has a blue XPS foam core that is 100% waterproof and sandwiched between two layers of reinforced cement resin.

My buddy Steve White from SRW Contracting loves Wedi panels.

Taping and finishing drywall corners is an art.

Today’s lesson discusses how to make the corners look awesome with a few different tips.

First you’ll have to choose which type of joint compound you want.

Pre-mixed and setting-type joint compound are two common options.

Pre-mixed mud takes a bit longer to setup.

Setting-type joint compound comes in 20 minute, 45 minute, and 90 minute varieties.

This means the mud will setup in about 20, 45, or 90 minutes.

The key to getting great drywall corners is to stagger the mudding process.

Listen to the podcast for all the tips :D

Walk-in showers are the new thing in bathroom remodeling.

Today, Steve White from SRW Contracting shares how he installs this kind of shower.

If you’ve dreamed of getting a new shower you should listen.

Steve recommends the VIM level entry shower kit which you can research here

http://www.vimproducts.com/

He also likes using Schluter Ditra on wood subfloors to prevent tiles from cracking and to waterproof the entire bathroom. This is especially important when you install a walk-in shower system

http://www.schluter.com/

Steve also recommends the AKW curbless pan because no blocking is needed under the pan
